Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Swollen, red, bleeding, or receding gums are symptoms of periodontal disease. This is a stealthy bacterial infection of the gums that many people do not know they have because there is no pain until the advanced stages. Left untreated, periodontal disease progresses and destroys the bone supporting the teeth, resulting in tooth loss. It is the most common cause of tooth loss in this country. In addition, recent medical research links periodontal disease to heart disease and strokes. Studies have also shown that having a chronic infection in your mouth causes your body’s entire immune system to work harder.

Fortunately, our San Diego dentist has many ways of controlling this active infection to help prevent tooth loss or the need for gum surgery. Dr. Steven Krause is able to reach below the gum line where your toothbrush cannot reach. Laser therapy gently removes infected tissue and actually vaporizes the bacteria causing the infection. Antibiotics that time-release during a one- to two-week time period can be placed beneath the tissue at the site of the infection.

Dr. Krause uses a tiny intra-oral camera to evaluate your teeth and gums while you watch a magnified image on a color computer screen. This state-of-the-art technology allows Dr. Krause and you to simultaneously walk through the diagnosis.

Digital X-rays are large, high-quality images that can be viewed on a computer screen by doctor and patient alike, making it easier for patients to understand their treatment. Just like a digital photograph, digital X-rays can be emailed or enlarged. They are quickly captured during a simple in-office process that uses much less radiation than conventional X-rays.

Advanced laser cavity detection allows Dr. Krause to discover emerging decay that may be hidden in the cracks and crevices of teeth even before it becomes visible on X-rays. This is when it is easiest and least expensive to treat.

Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry has changed the face of dentistry forever! Our hard-tissue laser eliminates the need for drill when performing a variety of dental procedures. Instead of utilizing drills and needles, laser dentistry gently removes decayed tissue from your teeth.

Our hard-tissue laser is especially effective when combined with our high-tech laser detection tools such as DIAGNOdent®, which can detect cavities much earlier and more accurately than earlier diagnostic methods.
